Dear Dr. Tillich:

To bother you many times and about the same matter is certainly not my wish. But it is necessary to write once again in regard to permission, should you be willing to grant it, for translating your work.

In a letter of a year or more ago1 you very graciously wrote that you would be glad to grant to the Rev. David Goto permission to translate „The Religious Situation“, and in the same letter you mentioned „The Protestant Era“ as being included in the permission.2

It was my feeling and interpretation of your letter that you would be glad to have Goto translate any of your work. But in as much as „The Shaking of The Foundations“ was not mentioned specifically in the letter, he does not feel that he has a right to go ahead.

If you are willing that he should, please send me a note, granting him this permission.3

His translation of „The Religious Situation“ will be off the presses before very long I understand.4 He is now reading the „Shaking of the Foundations“ and is intensely interested and wants to go to work on it. It seems likely that „The Protestant Era“ will be given later attention.5 I agree that it would be better to introduce the volume of sermons first. He has been asked to write an article on this for one of Christian journals which he says he is about to do.

I am concerned that Goto may go to the States for further study, preferably at Union, and I trust he may take a good part of his work under you.

I hope you may have your secretary reply to us soon in regard to „The Shaking of the Foundations“. And we can get in touch with the publisher right away, if you are willing.
