Dear Friend (Details anzeigen):

The grimmest aftermath of the war is that those who have survived in body are in so many instances broken in spirit. Especially is this true of people like ourselves, trained for intellectual pursuits, but unable like us to continue in the field of their choice and skill. The International Committee for Securing Employment to Refugee Professional Workers was organized a decade ago to assist such persons. Up to the end of 1946 aid had been given to 2.869 individuals.

The assistance is varied according to circumstance and is never in excess of the need. The tought is not to bring these persons to this country but to assist them where they are. Frequently a relatively small sum is enough to secure continuance in a profession, for it may be necessary only to secure the transfer of a student from a camp to a college, or to provide necessary instruments for a doctor or scientist. The scope of the committee is being enlarged in that aid will be extended to scholars and artists who do not belong strictly in the class of „refugee“, for so often those who have not been uprooted are nevertheless unable to carry on.

Funds for the continuation of this work are ever more difficult to secure. The committee is seeking, therefore, to enlist the help of a larger number of folk like ourselves, of modest income but deep concern for the rebuilding of the intellectual and professional life in the devastated lands. The hope is that a goodly number may see their way clear to contribute.
