Dear Dr. Tillich:

It is a number of years since we met in Carmel. That I met you encourages me to send you today a translation of mine which I have just completed.1 It is Novalis' Die Christenheit oder Europa.

This essay seems to me one of the most beautiful pieces of German prose in regard to form as well as to content. It contains a good deal of timely and prophetic wisdom.

Don't you think that The Review of Religion would be an appropriate magazin [sic!] for publication? And furthermore, in case you should like my translation would you be willing to hand it on with a recommandation [sic!] ? Do you feel that such a publication would ask for a general short introduction and if you think so would you have any suggestion who would be willing and equipped to write it?

You can imagine that I am most interested in your reaction since there are not many people in this country who can judge Novalis text from a literary as well as from a religious point of view.

Will you permit me to add one personal note, because this translation may come somewhat unexpectedly to you. In the fall or winter issue of the Journal of the History of Ideas you will find an essay of mine „The Landscape Garden as a Symbol in Rousseau, Goethe and Flaubert“, this I am mentioning in order to give you an idea what I have done during these last years.
