Dear Professor Tillich:

This morning I talked with you by phone concerning our hope that we might have the good fortune, Christianly speaking, of your presence on Sunday, March 13th.

We are trying to set before our community, particularly this Harvard University area, a kind of mission, during which the Christian faith would be as decisively and as definitely presented as it is possible. For ten days from March 11th to March 20th, we are planning the programs. The opening meeting of a general character will be addressed by President Harold Tribble of Andover-Newton Theological School. On Sunday we would like you to preach at both the morning worship service in the sanctuary and at the Sunday Evening Club for students in the East Chapel. I have used the term „preach“ because we would like to respect in both occasions the religious urgency of action and decision. There will be many students in the morning service, and some adults in the evening one; the former of course will be more formal, and the latter will be somewhat informal, as you would expect.

Following Sunday, we expect to engage in visitation and personal evangelism, with a meeting on Friday night where Dr. Raymond Calkins will consider the daily discipline of being a Christian. On Sunday the 20th, we will celebrate a service of commitment and consecration.

I think that we would have no difficulty in seeing that you arrive back in New York for Monday morning classes. You could return by sleeper, leaving here at midnight. Our honorarioum is not as large as it should be, but we can give you fifty dollars and all expenses.

I need not say how deeply I hope you can come to us. This is more than a personal wish. I am thinking of the general climate here of non-existential thought, and the general academic urbanity which disavows all involvement and need on the fundamentally human level. I have been much moved by your recent book of sermons and the „Protestant Era“. Certainly the way in which you were able to „tighten up“ the whole loose and irresponsive chaos of present day experience is something which would greatly bless us.
