Dear Mr. Tillich:

Some of the former students of Dr. Leo Baeck, have felt that his visit to Chicago would be an appropriate time for academic honors, if former German scholars, like yourself, felt that his academic achievements entitled him to such honors.

I discussed the matter with President Ernest Colwell of the University of Chicago, and out of the suggestion came a plan that I write to yourself and some of the other men, who we thought knew Dr. Baeck and his work.

You will recall that while you were still at home Dr. Baeck was teaching at the Hochschule in Berlin. Of course when the plague came into Germany, he, like others, was put in the concentration camp, from which he was fortunately rescued by the American army.

If you feel that he is worthy of an honory degree from the University, I would ask you to write a letter to Dr. Ernest Colwell to that effect. The matter rests altogether with you.

You will, of course, have no idea who I am, although when you were at the University of Chicago I learned to know you, unfortunately, only casually. I hope you will be able to agree with us in this matter.
