Dear Mr. Tillich:

We were delighted to receive your letter of April 2, 1947,1 and to learn that you agree with us on the advisability to plan your SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY as a two-volume work approximately 250,000 words in total length.

On this basis, we hope to present the project to our Publications Committee in the near future with the suggestion to authorize a definite commitment on our part.

The organization of this work is of course entirely in your hands and I am retracting my recent remark that the two volumes might be made independent of each other. What I meant to say was that perhaps the work could be so organized that Volume I might be published before Volume II. You will, of course, rely entirely on your own judgment in this matter.

I hope the above will allow you to plan your work for the balance of this year. I hope to be able, within a month or so, to inform you of a favorable decision of our Publication Committee.
