Dear Mr. Davidson:

As I understand Dr. Hannah Hafkesbrink of Connecticut College, New London, Conn. has submitted to you a manuscript in which you might be interested for publication.1 I think it would be very important that Dr. Hafkesbrink's book be published. I read it very carefully and was deeply impressed by the material used and the interpretation given. The book illuminates a period of the history of German culture and thought which is decisive for the understanding of the present situation and which inspite of this is very little known even to the scholars of history.

The selection of the letters and the other material is excellent and very representative; the style is warm and vivid but the author never oversteps the limit of scientific objectivity. Not only everybody who deals vocationally with the history of German culture, but a larger public interested in the state of mind of the German people in the period of the world wars would be potential readers of the book.
