Dear Dr. Tillich (Details anzeigen):

Your friends and mine have passed along the world that on August 20th you reach your sixtieth birthday. I do not want to let the day go without a word of congratulation from me, and a personal tribute to you, your character, your teaching and your influence.

The older I grow the more convinced I am that one of man's frailest abilities is the ability to understand himself and his history. From Washington (Details anzeigen) to Paris (Details anzeigen) peace conferences to the disturbances in our own persons, the same lack of understanding is obvious. I am one who shares this lack, but I want to say that I may be more aware of it than some others, because of you. I remember your lectures on systematic theology. They were interesting to me, not because of the system they put forth, but because of the philosophy of history they revealed and the workings of your mind. They have been very influential on my thinking.

Don't think that you are old, Dr. Tillich (Details anzeigen). The best years are ahead, and I for one am glad that you are here to live |:in:| them and face their problems.

Every good wish to you on your anniversary, and to your family. God bless you.

Faithfully yours,Richard T. Baker (Details anzeigen)
