Many thanks for your letter which I read with the greatest interest and with the certain hope to have very soon an occasion to discuss it with you. For the time being I only like to deal with one of the paragraphs because it is based on a misunderstanding. I certainly did not want to say that the religious educators of any type have no personal religion, just the opposite is true; the seriousness of which the whole group deals with the problem of religious education always has found my full admiration. The point I made in this respect was that our period has all different types of religion and that the mind of everybody is split between different types. This is even more true of parents who have never dealt especially with religious problems and do not know what to give their children because they have no powerful religious symbols and rites themselves. I wanted to give a criticism of our period with respect to uniting symbols of that strength which we find in earlier periods of history. My purpose was not to criticize the religious educators, parents as well as professional educators, but on the contrary, to apologize for them because they can not be made responsible for the insatisfactory situation of the Church as a whole. I feel myself entirely under this judgement which has the character of an historical destiny to be conquered by new prophetic movements. I think the educational development is very good but the tremendous difficulties of our education is not the educational method but the religious content which is given to us by history or which is taken away from us by history and which can not be created by education. This was the meaning of the point you referred to. With respect to all the other points we really should have a discussion as soon as possible.
