Dear Paul:

I suggest that you obtain from the Registrar's Office an exact statement concerning the academic record that Chares Ives made while he was in the Seminary, together with the date when he received our B. D. degree.1

Charles is a very attractive and genial young man, who was equally |:eagerly:| interested in philosophical and theological problems during his days here. (He was a friend of Steve Hartshorne and belonged to the Hartshorne cult – remember?)

Unfortunately I do not know much at first hand about the work he has done in the parish since his graduation from Union. I do know, however, that he got into trouble in his first charge in Connecticut because he combatted controversial|:ventional:| ideas of immortality. I believe that it stirred up such a controversy, that he finally had to resign. His attack on the idea of immortality followed well-known Tillichian lines, but apparently with youthful American indiscretion instead of with irenic, Tillichian charity.

This is all I can tell you about the young man.
