I was very glad to hear that you have the application of Dr. Josef Maier (Details anzeigen)^b under consideration for a teaching position in the Department of Modern Language of your College.

I have known Dr. Maier (Details anzeigen)^c for many years. He has always impressed me as a very vigorous and earnest young scholar well deserving of the interest of an institution of higher learning. His knowledge in the field of German literature and philosophy is profound, indeed. He has of course full control of the German language. I have had frequent opportunity to learn of his genuine pedagogic qualities through our internal scientific conference on German philosophy and the sociology of German literature as well as from observing his contacts with students from Columbia University. He is well able to express his ideas so as to make himself understood by every one, and he possesses also the patience and particular faculties expected of a good teacher. Dr. Maier (Details anzeigen)^d is now lecturing at New York University.

Personally I have always felt a great attachment for him, and I am absolutely convinced that he will be liked by any group of teachers and students with whom he may come in contact at your institution.
