Dear Dr. Tillich (Details anzeigen),

On this, your sixtieth birthday, I should like not only to tender my congratulations but more particularly to express my appreciation to you for the impact of your teaching upon so many of us. As witness to this admiration, I mention only that not a few of us, who in some way might qualify as former students, have returned to study under your direction.

The combination of devotion and hard thought, of freedom and discipline, that is so echoed in your lectures have held many of us, over against the distortions which are so prevalent in American theological orientation through the omission of one or the other of these factors.

In content, your thinking has welcomed because it is able to relate the Christian faith to the world in which men live without sacrificing the distinctive character of faith or ignoring the relative character of historical events and decisions. Because in a practical America (Details anzeigen) you have shown the relevance of thought to action, more specifically Christian thought to the decisions of our time, you have made an invaluable contribution to the culture in which we live.

It is my hope, as it is of many, that the decade in which you are entering will see the publication of your theological thought. You are among the privileged few upon |:whom:| the necessity of publication is urged.
