It is understood at seminary that August 20, is your birthday. I am writing to add my congratulations and appreciation to that of many students who have sat at your feet.

There would be no exaggeration in the statement that you have stimulated the thinking of the Union student body through the years in a unique way. That has certainly been my own experience. Specifically, the concept of God as Ground of Existence has enriched my American liberal personalistic view of God. Your emphasis upon the importance of considering every area of life theologically has lent great significance to my doctrine of general revelation and my ethical understanding of stewardship. The correlations in your thinking, between the findings of the natural sciences and the theological expressions of Christianity has often stimulated me to seek new relationships between science and religion.

While there are many facets of your thought that I have yet to understand, the practical outworking of your teaching has been a more catholic and a more open approach to the issues of life, for me. What other students have said bears out that testimony to your instruction. I pray that your most creative years stretch on ahead of you.
