Dear Miss Neumann:

Mr. Artur F/ Michel has asked me to write a few words about him to you. May I give you the following statement:

Mr. A. F. Michel is known to me since the first year after the first world war when the great movement of modern artistic dance came to its heights in post- war democratic Germany. Mr. Michel became at that time the most famous critic of the whole movement. His interpretation in the „Vossische Zeitung“ were decisive for the valuation of the different dance groups of that time. As Professor in Dresden, the center of the whole movement, I had many occasions to observe the influence Michel had by criticism and personal relationship to all leadres of the artistic dance movement, especially on the outstanding figure Maty Wigman.

At the same time Michel became a scholar in the history and philosophy of dance who knows more about it than anybody whom I could mention. A history of the European theatre dance coming from his pen would be an event for the scientific, artistic and philosophical interpretation of this characteristic side of the development of European civilization. It would unite scientific thoroughness with an immediate intuitive approach as rarely will be found again in this realm.
