My dear Professor Tillich (Details anzeigen):

When you were so kind as to agree to collaborate with me on a bit of political warfare through the Columbia Broadcasting System our understanding was that we would do this as a free contribution, and this was in a sense justified because the Columbia Broadcasting System is actually spending $750,000 a year on short-wave facilities for which it is in no way compensated by the Government. I also felt that our little contribution might not come up to scratch–– I certainly felt it about myself–– and I liked the freedom which our free gift gave us.

However, the broadcasts have been immensely successful both in the eyes of the Government authorities and of Columbia, and Columbia this week has offered me $20 a week for each of the collaborators to be regarded, of course, not as a payment for services–– for it is totally inadequate for that–– but as a contribution to expenses. I believe that Columbia is assigning the whole sum to me –– although there are some possible disadvantages because of possible complications with the income authorities. In any case I want to call attention that this small sum is given to you as expenses and will be so entered on Columbia’s books, and therefore is not taxable on your income tax.
