- Masaccio (21. Dezember 1401 – Juni 1428) begründete mit dem Trinitätsfresko in S. Maria Novella (Florenz) und den gemeinsam mit Masolino begonnenen Fresken der Brancacci-Kapelle die Frührenaissance, indem er Brunelleschis Zentralperspektive, eine einheitliche Lichtquelle und kraftvoll-plastische Figuren zu einer bisher unerreichten Wirklichkeitsschilderung verband. Seine monumentale, von Donatello inspirierte Körperauffassung und psychologische Gestik überwanden den „weichen Stil“ der Gotik und prägten die Malerei bis Michelangelo.
