- El Greco (Doménikos Theotokópoulos; um 1541 – 7. April 1614) war ein auf Kreta geborener Maler, der nach Lehrjahren in Venedig und Rom in Toledo eine einzigartige Synthese aus byzantinischer Ikonentradition, venezianischer Farbigkeit und manieristischer Figurenstreckung schuf. Seine dramatisch beleuchteten, gefühlsbetonten Heiligenbilder – etwa der neuartige Franziskus-Typus – fanden Anklang bei Toledos humanistisch-spirituellen Kreisen und machten ihn zum Wegbereiter des Barocks wie der Moderne.
