- Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906) aus Aix-en-Provence gilt als Schlüsselfigur an der Schwelle vom Impressionismus zur Moderne. Nach abgebrochenem Jurastudium zog er 1861 nach Paris, arbeitete an der Académie Suisse mit Pissarro, Monet, Renoir und anderen Impressionisten zusammen und stellte 1874–77 mit ihnen aus, fand jedoch erst 1895 durch Ambroise Vollards Pariser Einzelausstellung breitere Anerkennung. Mit seinen konstruktiv aufgebauten Landschaften, Stillleben und Figurenbildern wurde er posthum zum „Vater der Moderne“ und prägte Wegbereiter wie Picasso und Matisse.
