Short biography

Randall, John Herman jr. (14.2.1899 Grand Rapids – 1.12.1980 New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Historiker und Philosoph. Er lehrte sein Leben lang an der Columbia University, geprägt von Dewey und Woodbridge, und verstand sich als Pragmatiker und Naturalist. 1933/34 forschte er mit einem Guggenheim-Stipendium in Padua über die Averroisten, deren Bedeutung für die Entwicklung wissenschaftlicher Methoden er hervorhob. Sein Hauptwerk ist The Career of Philosophy (1962/65). Er deutete Metaphysik und Religion als symbolische Orientierung, vertrat eine pluralistische Aristoteles-Interpretation und forderte, Philosophiegeschichte kulturgeschichtlich zu verstehen.
