               <lb facs="#facs_3_l_81" n="N012"/>(myth and its theological and philosophical conceptualisation) and of 
               <lb facs="#facs_3_l_88" n="N013"/>action (ritual and ethical activities) expressing a particular
               <lb facs="#facs_3_l_95" n="N014"/>direction of the ultimate concern (churches, sects, monastic groups,
               <lb facs="#facs_3_l_102" n="N015"/>ecstatic movements).

               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_13" n="N002"/>{The} All <rs type="keyword" ref="#Culture">cultural</rs> conflicts with religion are dependent on the {identification} reduction of re-
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_20" n="N003"/>ligion with the narrower concept of religion. Since
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_27" n="N004"/>this narrower concept {covers} refers to religious groups which are a part of cultur{al}e
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_34" n="N005"/>{activities} themselves, the conflict occurs with <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">them</hi>: Church as a
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_41" n="N006"/>{centered} social group with power against the state {with the} on the basis of its religious
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_48" n="N007"/>claim of ultimacy, {because of ultimate concern} based on revelatory and
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_65" n="N008"/>saving experiences: The same {with} conflict about legal and political ideas,
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_72" n="N009"/>with educational aims and artistic styles. And the same
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_79" n="N010"/>conflict about {its} affirmations of truth in religion, science and philoso-
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_86" n="N011"/>phy. This brings us directly to our subject of today.
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_93" n="N012"/>And it gives us not only the weapon to overcome the
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_100" n="N013"/>conflicts, but also a way of reunion of {activities} functions of
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_107" n="N014"/>the human <rs type="keyword" ref="#Spirit">spirit </rs>which belong together and are separated
               <lb facs="#facs_4_l_114" n="N015"/>by man's estrangement.
            </p>

               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_13" n="N002"/><hi style="text-decoration: underline;">I. Philosophy </hi>{as such}
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_20" n="N003"/>1. The precise definition of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Philosophy">philosophy</rs> [...] is identical
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_27" n="N004"/>with the philosophical creation itself. Nevertheless: Depart-
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_34" n="N005"/>ments, {an} histories and even textbooks of philosophy: A
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_41" n="N006"/>common sense circumscription: Most universal problems.
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_48" n="N007"/>But this can lead to <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">the</hi> most universal problem: <rs type="keyword" ref="#Being">Being</rs>.
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_55" n="N008"/>2. The rise of the question out of man's power to
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_62" n="N009"/>face non-<rs type="keyword" ref="#Being">being</rs>, in concreto: The change and transitoriness and one's own non-being (not
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_69" n="N010"/>having been and not to be sometime), in abstracto: the
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_76" n="N011"/>question of possible non-being universally (not a ques-
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_83" n="N012"/>tion but a shock.): {What makes being being?} {The question is:} {What}    
               <lb facs="#facs_5_l_90" n="N013"/>{in being is itself?} Why is there something not nothing?
            </p>

               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_44" n="N002"/><hi style="text-decoration: underline;">I. The sciences and religion</hi>
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_51" n="N003"/>1. The term <rs type="keyword" ref="#Science">science</rs> {is} shall not be restricted to natural scien-
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_58" n="N004"/>ces but shall include every methodologically disciplined
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_65" n="N005"/>scholarly research as e.g. psychology, sociology and history.
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_72" n="N006"/><rs type="keyword" ref="#Philosophy">Philosophy</rs> shall not be treated as a particular science,
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_79" n="N007"/>but as the <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">cognitive eros towards the whole</hi>, {which of}
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_86" n="N008"/>{course.} The whole is effective in all its parts and the philosophical eros therefore reaches
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_93" n="N009"/>into all particulars. This leads to questions about {not only of the}
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_118" n="N010"/>{relation of the philosophical to the theological attitude but}
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_125" n="N011"/>{also to} the relation of philosophy to science and {we ma} to the place
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_67" n="N012"/>{problem of the ethical problems} {of the} of the scien-
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_132" n="N013"/>tist in the whole of human existence, especially in the present situation. {N}
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_139" n="N014"/>2. {A} The great problem of the past {ment in and up to now and} which is almost obsolet today is
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_146" n="N015"/>that about the relation of theological and scientific sta-
               <lb facs="#facs_6_l_153" n="N016"/>tements. Here the language analysis, done from both sides
            </p>

               <lb facs="#facs_7_l" n="N002"/>has helped: One knows: The <rs type="keyword" ref="#Science">scientific</rs> language is predominantly calculating = detached,
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_13" n="N003"/>the religious language predominantly existential _ involved. (The progress
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_20" n="N004"/>in the analytic school in acknowledging this). From this
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_27" n="N005"/>follows that all religious statements are analogous or
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_34" n="N006"/>symbolic, and are distorted if taken litterally. One
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_41" n="N007"/>can, more directly, say that {the two lie} {in} they belong to different di-
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_48" n="N008"/>mensions, the dimension of finite interrelations and the
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_55" n="N009"/>dimension of the meaning of being, our infinite concern.
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_62" n="N010"/>3. This can be forgotten from both sides: <rs type="keyword" ref="#Theology">Theology</rs> can
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_69" n="N011"/>take, {mostly} on ecclesiastical or Biblical authority, state-
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_76" n="N012"/>ments about things and events as religiously authorised: e.g. physical,
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_83" n="N013"/>biological, psychological or historical statements. ({the crea-}
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_90" n="N014"/>{tion and consummation, stories, myths, miracle stories,} astrono-
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_97" n="N015"/>mical views, biological statements about man, psycholo-
               <lb facs="#facs_7_l_104" n="N016"/>gical theories about human nature etc.). In all these
            </p>

               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_17" n="N002"/>cases science has to reject any such claim if it lies
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_24" n="N003"/>in the realm of verifyable statements about facts
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_31" n="N004"/>and {the} relations including historical ones (Fundamentalism). _ On the other hand, <rs type="keyword" ref="#Science">science </rs>should {can}not inter-
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_38" n="N005"/>fer in the world of religious <rs type="keyword" ref="#Symbol">symbols</rs>, denie religion
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_54" n="N006"/>because of taking litterally, what is in reality symbolic.
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_160" n="N007"/>{literally denying the stories of creation, fall,}
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_68" n="N008"/>{salvation, consummation, in its}  (The fight against theology in its primitive-suprana-
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_75" n="N009"/><hi/>
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_82" n="N010"/>turalistic forms instead of its latest, selfreflective and selflimiting forms).
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_89" n="N011"/>{highly}  [And even more, science should {can}not denie{s} {to have}
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_96" n="N012"/>that there is a dimension {and accordingly} of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Ultimate_concern">ulti-
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_8_l_103" n="N013"/>mate concern </rs>(as it cannot denie the artistic and
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_110" n="N014"/>ethical dimensions).]
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_117" n="N015"/><hi style="text-decoration: underline;">There is no religious statement which can con-</hi>
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_124" n="N016"/><hi style="text-decoration: underline;">tradict a scientific statement and vice versa</hi>, although [...] there
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_131" n="N017"/>are {many} scientists and theologians (laymen), unaware of this situation {what}
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_138" n="N018"/>{they} {are supposed to} {can and cannot} {do},  who can contradict each other {and do so}
               <lb facs="#facs_8_l_145" n="N019"/>by confusing the dimensions.
            </p>

            <p facs="#facs_9_r_2">
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l" n="N001"/>[5a]
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_14" n="N002"/>4. But there remains still the question of the
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_21" n="N003"/>basic attitudes and their contrast. The attitude of the
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_28" n="N004"/>scientist, detached, calculating, counting on many possible errors in
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_35" n="N005"/>observation, cautious in making statements which preliminary
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_42" n="N006"/>assertions only, separating his scientific work from the other
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_49" n="N007"/>concerns of life in which emotion and will, moral 
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_56" n="N008"/>tradition and religious or political loyalty are included.
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_63" n="N009"/>The <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">religious </rs>man living in the tradition of a
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_70" n="N010"/>particular set of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Symbol">symbols</rs> in which he moves as {a} the
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_77" n="N011"/>{foundation of his existence} expressions of the meaning {of} life, has for him, resisting doubt,
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_84" n="N012"/>accepting Biblical or ecclesiastical <rs type="keyword" ref="#Authority">authority</rs>, giving un-
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_91" n="N013"/>conditional loyalty to the manifestation of the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Holy">holy</rs> in his religious
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_98" n="N014"/>tradition.
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_105" n="N015"/>But is this the real situation? Certainly it is felt so {like}
               <lb facs="#facs_9_l_112" n="N016"/>{it} by innumerable people [young scientists!]. The scientist claims not to under-

            <p facs="#facs_10_r">
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l" n="N001"/>[6]
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_13" n="N002"/><hi style="text-decoration: underline;">II. Philosophy and the sciences</hi>
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_20" n="N003"/>1. The first step in relating religion and the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Science">sciences</rs>
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_27" n="N004"/>has been done: The boundary line has been drawn. This is
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_34" n="N005"/>extremely important in view of the history of the conflicts from
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_41" n="N006"/><rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__654">Galileo</rs> to <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__428">Darwin</rs> and <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__619">Freud</rs>. It is still important in 
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_48" n="N007"/>theology where church <rs type="keyword" ref="#Authority">authorities</rs> as well as Christian laymen
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_55" n="N008"/> resist, e.g. historical research into the Biblical books, and the discovery of {showing} the
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_62" n="N009"/>mixture of historical, legendary and mythical elements in them.
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_69" n="N010"/>(The dangers of hiding these inquiries from the congregations, thus 
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_76" n="N011"/>producing shocks, if people encounter the procedures of historical
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_83" n="N012"/>research and cannot honestly deny their methodological va-
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_90" n="N013"/>lidity.) _ On the other hand, these scholars themselves should
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_97" n="N014"/>not derive from their work alone negative or positive judgments
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_104" n="N015"/>about the validity of the Christian message of the appearance of
               <lb facs="#facs_10_l_111" n="N016"/> a healing or saving reality in a personal life. {This example}
            </p>

            <p facs="#facs_11_r">
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l" n="N001"/>[7]
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_13" n="N002"/>{the lasting importance of the drawing of the boundary line.} 
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_20" n="N003"/>2. But this is not all what can be said. The re-
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_27" n="N004"/>volt of the scientists in Harvard against only this. They see {saw}
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_34" n="N005"/>in their own work a religious dimension and so did the 
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_41" n="N006"/>psychologists and physicians who {now work togeth} call 
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_48" n="N007"/>theologians for exchange. _ {This leads to the relation of}
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_55" n="N008"/>{<rs type="keyword" ref="#Philosophy">philosophy</rs> and the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Science">sciences</rs>.} Those scientists did their work with
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_62" n="N009"/>philosophical <rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros">eros</rs> and with consciousness of their own phi-
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_69" n="N010"/>losophical presuppositions. The sciences are born out of philoso-
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_76" n="N011"/>phy, which asked the question of the universe, the whole
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_83" n="N012"/>of being, or simply: <rs type="keyword" ref="#Being">being</rs>; and {it} philosophy the formed some main univer-
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_90" n="N013"/>sal characteristics of being like the categories (time, space, causality), the polarities,
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_17" n="N014"/>form and matter, {potentiality and actuality,} 
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_97" n="N015"/>the relation of potentiality and actuality, essence and existence, of subject
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_104" n="N016"/>and object, of knowledge, {etc} of logical and linguistic struc-
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_111" n="N017"/>tures, as being and ought to be, as the different dimensions of
               <lb facs="#facs_11_l_118" n="N018"/>reality and their relations, concepts like, nature, life, history,

               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_27" n="N004"/>3. No scientific inquiry is possible without the use
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_34" n="N005"/>of these concepts, openly or hiddenly [conference with <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__3860">Hutchins</rs>]. They {introduce} point
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_41" n="N006"/>to an element in science which transcends science, the
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_48" n="N007"/>cognitive <rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros">eros</rs>, directed to the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Whole">whole</rs>. This element is effec-
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_55" n="N008"/>tive in the scientific procedures * which, conversly, contri-
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_62" n="N009"/>bute to the vision of the whole. _ (-) Most of the {scie}
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_69" n="N010"/>creative scientists [...] in the past were driven by the eros towards
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_76" n="N011"/>the universal within their particular field; they were more than
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_83" n="N012"/>scientific technicians or solvers of logical riddles.
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_97" n="N013"/>4. Qualifications of the "whole": The<rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros"> eros</rs> for the whole, the cosmos, the uni-
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_104" n="N014"/>verse, is not directed {to the} towards the sum-total
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_111" n="N015"/>of all particulars, but towards the underlying unity{,}
               <lb facs="#facs_12_l_118" n="N016"/>within the diversity. Philosophy, in asking this question,

               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_13" n="N002"/>was driven by the experience that what seems to
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_20" n="N003"/>be real {was} proved not to be <rs type="keyword" ref="#Real">real</rs>; and so the 
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_27" n="N004"/>question arose for the really real, {the ground of every-}
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_34" n="N005"/>{thing that is,} that which underlies and transcends 
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_41" n="N006"/>everything that seems to be real, but which oscillates
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_48" n="N007"/>between real and only seeming. So the question of ulti-
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_55" n="N008"/>mate reality arose with the beginning of philosophy, and in it the ground of both,
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_62" n="N009"/>the unity and the manifoldness of the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Whole">whole</rs> was seen.
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_69" n="N010"/>So the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros">eros</rs> for the whole became the passionate de-
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_76" n="N011"/>sire to find cognitively the ultimately real, the truly
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_83" n="N012"/>real itself. Even in logical analysis an image of the real is present. This eros and passion has led to contradic-
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_90" n="N013"/>tory answers. {In this} But in the eros for the whole all philosophers, (and not only those
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_97" n="N014"/>of the West) are united. Their answers divide them,
               <lb facs="#facs_13_l_104" n="N015"/>their eros and the inner force of reality itself unites them. _ And insofar as the philosophical

               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_27" n="N004"/><hi style="text-decoration: underline;">III. <rs type="keyword" ref="#Philosophy">Philosophy</rs> and <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">Religion</rs></hi>
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_34" n="N005"/>1. The search for the unity of the {appearing} existing in and for <rs type="keyword" ref="#Ultimate">ulti-
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_14_l_41" n="N006"/>mate</rs> reality is an element in the religious concern;
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_48" n="N007"/>for the <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">cognitive <rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros">eros</rs></hi><rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros"/> is never missing in {the} religion, but 
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_55" n="N008"/>the religious concern is {all} more embracing. It will not 
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_62" n="N009"/>only recognize ultimate reality, it will reunite
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_69" n="N010"/>with it, {in all sides of the him who is grasped by} and shape himself and his world accordingly
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_76" n="N011"/>{the ultimate, the religious concern.}  {Lea} This leads to
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_83" n="N012"/>the assertion of a point of identity between philoso-
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_90" n="N013"/>phy (and by implication of all sciences) and religion: The
               <lb facs="#facs_14_l_97" n="N014"/>desire to unite cognitively with ultimate reality, in

               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_55" n="N008"/>a] The background {and predecessor} of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Philosophy">philosophy</rs> is
               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_62" n="N009"/><rs type="keyword" ref="#Myth">mythology</rs>, in which the experience of ultimate rea-
               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_69" n="N010"/>lity {is} is expressed in powerful symbols. These myths combines an aesthetic, {intuiti} and a cognitive
               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_76" n="N011"/>element. Slowly (comp. Greek theology and cosmogony) the
               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_83" n="N012"/>conceptual element becomes {predominant} independent {and} makes
               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_90" n="N013"/>out of mythical symbols rational concepts and leaves
               <lb facs="#facs_15_l_97" n="N014"/>the myth to poetry. _ The {quest} process of "demythologization."

               <lb facs="#facs_16_l_54" n="N007"/>both: The mythical background and the religious substance in the philosophical concepts,
               <lb facs="#facs_16_l_61" n="N008"/>and the philosophical concepts in {the cognitive self-} expressing the religious
               <lb facs="#facs_16_l_68" n="N009"/>{expression of religion, in} substance through the "logos." Genuine conflicts are pos-
               <lb facs="#facs_16_l_75" n="N010"/>sible only if either the religious substance in a
               <lb facs="#facs_16_l_82" n="N011"/>particular philosophy contradicts the religious substance
               <lb facs="#facs_16_l_89" n="N012"/>in a particular theology. (a Dionysian philosophy like

               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_41" n="N006"/>connection with space exploration, it becomes more abstract and more urgent than
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_48" n="N007"/>before. For here the horizontal line is almost completly formalized. The task is:
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_55" n="N008"/>to go forward for the sake of going forward, endlessly without a concrete focus.
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_62" n="N009"/>Of course, one could call the desire to learn more about the cosmic space and a-
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_69" n="N010"/>bout the astronomical bodies in it, a concrete aim, but this is only an accidental
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_76" n="N011"/>sto p. [sic.] The desire to go ahead whatever may be encounteted [sic.] gives the real impetus.
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_83" n="N012"/>But as the e x c l u s i v e surrender to the vertical line in mysticism leads
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_90" n="N013"/>to the impossibility of expressing anything and acting, in any direction, so the
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_97" n="N014"/>e x c l u s i v e surrender to the horizontal line . (in what one could call "for-
               <lb facs="#facs_19_l_104" n="N015"/>wardism") leads to the loss of any meaningful content and to complete emptiness.

               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_35" n="N004"/>quences, which criticism of holy traditions can have on the spirit of many people.
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_42" n="N005"/>But neither the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Prophet">prophet </rs>nor the philosopher can resign his vocation to fight for

               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_84" n="N011"/>same. Tragic consequences of the discovery and expression of truth are no reason
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_91" n="N012"/>for giving up the attempts to discover and the obligation to express truth. The
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_98" n="N013"/>danger for the soul of the believer should not stop the profetx [sic.] or the Reformer
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_105" n="N014"/>to pronounce truth in the vertical dimension; and the danger of destructive con-
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_112" n="N015"/>sequences of scientific discoveries (including those in social sc{h}iences and psy-
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_119" n="N016"/>chology) should not stop the scientists to search for and to express truth in
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_126" n="N017"/>the horizontal dimension. It is bad to try to avoid tragedy if the prize is to
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l_133" n="N018"/>avoid truth. [controversial] [Therefore, even if space explorationm [sic.] through its military implications
               <lb facs="#facs_20_l" n="N019"/>increased the chances of tragedy, this would not be a reason for stopping it. But
