Albert Einstein (14. März 1879 Ulm – 18. April 1955 Princeton, NJ) war ein deutsch-schweizerisch-amerikanischer theoretischer Physiker, der mit der speziellen (1905) und allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie (1915) das Verständnis von Raum, Zeit und Gravitation revolutionierte und damit zu einem der einflussreichsten Wissenschaftler aller Zeiten wurde. Für die Erklärung des photoelektrischen Effekts erhielt er 1921 den Nobelpreis; auch seine Arbeiten zur Brownschen Bewegung, zur Lichtquantentheorie und zum kosmologischen Modell prägten die moderne Physik. Über die Fachwelt hinaus engagierte sich Einstein, der im Exil zum Symbol für Pazifismus, Antifaschismus und Völkerverständigung wurde, zeitlebens für soziale Gerechtigkeit, internationale Kooperation und eine verantwortungsbewusste Nutzung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse.
