Sartre, Jean-Paul (21.6.1905 Paris – 15.4.1980 ebd.) war ein französischer Philosoph, Schriftsteller und einer der einflussreichsten Intellektuellen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit seinem Hauptwerk L’être et le néant (1943) begründete er den Existentialismus, der den Menschen als zur Freiheit verurteilt und radikal verantwortlich beschreibt. Politisch engagierte er sich gegen Kolonialkriege, unterstützte linke Bewegungen und lehnte 1964 den Nobelpreis ab. Er führte eine freie Partnerschaft mit Simone de Beauvoir. In seinen Romanen, Erzählungen und Theaterstücken stellte er den Menschen in Situationen existenzieller Wahl und Verantwortung dar.
Rimbaud, Arthur (20.10.1854 Charleville – 10.11.1891 Marseille) war ein französischer Dichter. Schon als Jugendlicher trat er mit Gedichten hervor, sein erstes erschien 1870 im Alter von 15 Jahren. Mit Werken wie Une saison en enfer und Illuminations galt er früh als Erneuerer der französischen Lyrik. 1875 gab er das Schreiben auf und führte ein ruheloses Leben als Reisender und Händler in Ägypten, Zypern, Aden und v. a. in Harär (Äthiopien), wo er mit Kaffee, Elfenbein und Waffen handelte und Sprachen wie Arabisch und Amharisch erlernte. 1891 kehrte er schwer krank nach Frankreich zurück und starb mit 37 Jahren an Krebs.
Strindberg, August (22.1.1849 Stockholm – 14.5.1912 ebd.) war Schriftsteller, Dramatiker und Kritiker. Er erneuerte das Drama vom Naturalismus (Fräulein Julie, 1888) bis zum Stationen- und Kammerspiel (Nach Damaskus, 1898–1904; Gespenstersonate, 1907). Neben realistischen Romanen (Das rote Zimmer, 1879; Die Leute von Hemsö, 1887) schrieb er autobiographische Werke und Lyrik. Sein Schaffen war von Krisen, Fehden und Selbstinszenierungen geprägt und verband sozialpsychologische, philosophische und religiöse Modelle.
