Nach der Emigration in die Vereinigten Staaten wirkte er als Vermittler zwischen kontinentaler und angelsächsischer Philosophie und zählt zu den bedeutenden Vertretern des Neuhegelianismus.</p>

Er stammte aus einer Pfarrersfamilie deutscher Einwanderer und war der Bruder von Reinhold Niebuhr. Nach Studien in Elmhurst, St. Louis, Washington und Yale, wo er 1924 promovierte, lehrte er zunächst in Elmhurst und St. Louis. Ab 1931 wirkte er an der Yale Divinity School, ab 1954 als Sterling Professor. Er war Mitbegründer der United Church of Christ und prägte Generationen von Theologen. Beeinflusst von Kierkegaard, Barth und Troeltsch verband er neo-orthodoxe und liberale Ansätze. In seinem Hauptwerk Christ and Culture (1951) plädierte er für ein kulturtransformierendes Christentum, während seine Schrift The Responsible Self (1962) seine theologische Ethik zusammenfasste.</p>

Sayers, W. H. Auden, Eric Gill und Edwin Lutyens – wirkte. Als einer der einflussreichsten katholischen Intellektuellen Englands zwischen den 1930er Jahren und seinem Tod verband er theologische Tiefe mit kulturellem Engagement. Sein Hauptwerk The Mind and Heart of Love (1945) untersucht das Verhältnis von eros und agape und gilt als klassischer Beitrag zur christlichen Liebesphilosophie.</p>

Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.</p>

In »Über die Religion« (1799) definierte er Religion als »Sinn und Geschmack fürs Unendliche«, in der »Glaubenslehre« (1821/22) als »Gefühl absoluter Abhängigkeit«. Er vermittelte zwischen Rationalismus, Romantik und Erweckungsbewegung.</p>
