called upon to fight not only against the abuse of drinking, alcoholic drinking, but also to introduce special laws, special techniques, to suppress it, in the moment of rohibition [sic.]. Nothing has more damaged the authority of the Church's message than their simple identification of what they had to say, with a special law of the state which proved to be, after a certain time, only an immense and unhoped-for gift for all gangs[ters], in this country. [little laughter] So the Church has to state the principles, negatively and positively, but the Church cannot, as church, speak about the remedies. And we religious socialists were very much aware of this. We never said that our analysis of the time, our suggestions of transformation, are identical with the message of Jesus-as- the-Christ. But as christians, we dared to fall into error and to make statements daringly, and [to] be judged by history itself. And we were!
