Being in charge to organize a new faculty of the social sciences at Groningen State University, Holland, the Netherland's government gave me a grant for professional observation in the U. S. A. during three months (20th March – 20th June).

Although my main object is to study some methods of modern social research in the States, I have many interests, especially in the field of social philosophy and social ethics. I hope you will allow me to pay you a visit – – bringing you the very kind regards of my friend and colleague Helmuth Plessner (Ordinarius of philosophy at our University). Last year I was guest-professor of sociology at Münster University. I made a close study about the German refugee-problem; as a matter of fact these 12 millions uprooted are a danger for Europe. I gathered materials and published part of my observations.Vgl. Pieter Jan Bouman: The Refugee Problem in Western Germany (1950). Whenever there might be in your Seminar interest (on a discussion) in these problems, we could consider the possibility of some lectures on this subject.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
