I am writing to you in connection with a plan to have 3 workcamps in the British Zone of Germany in the period of July 15th – August 5th. These workcamps have been organized by the Student Christian Movement in the Netherlands and the Liberal Christian Student League. The participants will be for each camp: 25 German students, 12 Dutch and 13 American students. The latter are members of the Congregational Student Christian Fellowship and the Presbyterian Student Christian Fellowship in the United States. The camps will be held at Hamburg, Göttingen and Münster.

Yesterday I had a visit of Miss Fern Babcook, who is a secretary of the Student Y. W. C. A. and who has her office at 600 Lexinton Avenue, New York. In speaking to her about these camps, I mentioned the possibility of an American speaker in these camps on the subject Europe seen from America. She then mentioned your name and told me that you were staying at Marburg. Therefore I am writing to you to ask you, whether you would be willing to speak in the camp at Münster on 21 July, at Göttingen on 27 July and at Hamburg on 31 July on this subject. I am sorry these dates are laying rather wide apart, but as some of the speakers of these camps have to come from Holland, it was not possible to bring the dates of this particular lecture closer together. If you are willing to speak to us, you could of course stay in each camp for a few days and talk with the students.

At this moment however, the possibility of the whole plan of these camps falling through is existing; the currency reform may make it impossible for the German participants, who come from different Universities, to come to the camps, owing to the fact that they will perhaps not be able to pay the travel-expenses. We are investigating this and shall decide on July 6th, whether these camps will take place or not. Therefore this invitation is a tentative one to ask you, whether you would be prepared to speak on the dates mentioned. As soon as we know what to do about these camps, I shall notify you of the decision taken. Would it be possible for you to send a telegram in reply to this letter to the office of the N. C. S. V. at Zeist, saying yes or no?

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
