May 15, 1948 Dear Miss Krauss:

Prof. Tillich, before his departure to Germany, asked me to write to you on behalf of Dr. Anita Orienter.

Dr. Orienter has come to the U. S. about two weeks ago. She seeks a teaching position for fall, but also some work during the summer. Her problem is that she is not alone but that she has to take care of her mother who is about 70 years old – healthy and active. It was my idea that Dr. Orienter may work in a camp as a teacher (She has taught French and Spanish for many years in Brazil) without renumeration and may take her mother along for the two summer months. But I do not know wether this is feasible.

I should be grateful for any advices you may give Dr. Orienter. Is there a chance that you come to New York in the near future? Or is there somebody of the American Friends Service Committee whom Dr. Orienter could see in New York? May I mention that Dr. Orienter is Catholic.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
