I have been invited to give a lecture on Existentialism at the Philosophical Club of the College of the City of New York on March 27th. For the preparation of this lecture, I should very much like to consult your views as expressed in the Journal of the History of Ideas about a year ago.Gemeint ist: Paul Tillich: Existential Philosophy (1944). However, I find this Journal unavailable here, and not available at the University of Toronto for another month or two. I wonder, therefore whether you could be so very kind as to loan me an offprint of that article. I could return it to you as soon as I have completed my lecture. If you do have an offprint at hand and can send it to me, I should appreciate it if you could let me have it soon, as I do not have much time left.

I should like to say again that I was very happy to make your acquaintance during my recent visit in New York, and I do hope to be able to have a talk with you soon again. I was, of course, especially glad to hear from you the good news about your nephew Ernst.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
