I hope you know how tremendously gratified and moved we all were last Sunday at your magnificent sermon. You were good enough to tell me that the sermon had a certain personal bearing. Perhaps knowing that quickened my feelings about it a little. I must tell you that it has been many a long day since there have been said in Chapel such great and simple statements of fact. I don't suppose we shall hear them soon again I was myself much moved by what you said, because you seemed so clearly to be talking about myself and to have penetrated to a region in which I am not yet at home. Many, many thanks.

I hope you will not forget to let me have a copy of your manuscript, if that is convenient to you. I don't know what other plans you may have, but I should like at least the privilege of having it mimeographed and sent out to some in the Chapel family who would especially appreciate reading it.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
