LAWRENCE HALL, KIRKLAND STREET CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS July 29, 1943 My dear Professor Tillich:

At the request of the Government, American Defense – Harvard Group is making a survey of the educational and scholarly personnel of Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, Bulgaria, Finland. I am writing to see if you will be so good as to supply me with information regarding teachers or investigators in the field of education and related flieds with whom you are directly or indirectly acquainted, and who, to the best of your knowledge, are at present in one of the above countries.

The primary purpose of the inquiry is to collect brief biographical records and estimates of individuals who can be relied on for personal integrity, disinterestedness and intellectual honesty; who enjoy a good reputation and exert influence in their communities; and who possess expert competence in their subjects or professions. Any information which you may provide will be held in strict confidence, and its source will not appear on the record. It will be used with discretion, and only to advance the declared aims and policies of the United States with regard to the several countries named, during the war and the immediate post-war period.

In supplying information, please use the enclosed questionnaire (FROM HA), and observe the following directions:

1. Questions filled or crossed (xxx) need not be answered, the information being already available from other sources.

2. Leave blank any questions which you do not deem yourself competent to answer either from your knowledge or after consultation with other sources.

3. Do not attach your name to the questionnaire, but attach the questionnaire to your return covering letter, and pencil your initials lightly at top of the first sheet.

4. Whenever relevant, indicate accuracy and recency of your information.

5. Enter on FROM HB the names of other sources from whom you have obtained information on any given person, together with your estimate of their reliability.

6. Under Comments (FROM HA) give any additional suggestions which you think would serve the purpose of the inquiry.

Heinrich Gottlob Robert Ulich (21. April 1890 – 17. Juni 1977) war ein deutscher Ministerialbeamter, Germanist und Bildungsforscher. Nach Studien an verschiedenen Hochschulen und Promotion 1915 arbeitete er zunächst als Lehrer und Bibliothekar, bevor er von 1920 bis 1933 als Ministerialbeamter in Dresden für Hochschul- und Forschungsangelegenheiten zuständig war. Er stand der SPD und dem religiösen Sozialismus nahe und setzte sich für Reformpädagogik und internationale Bildungsprojekte ein. 1934 emigrierte er in die USA, wurde Professor in Harvard und gilt als Mitbegründer der vergleichenden Erziehungswissenschaft. 1970 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück. Er war zunächst mit Elsa Brändström, später mit Mary Ewen Ulich verheiratet und wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem 1958 mit dem Großen Verdienstkreuz.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
