February 18, 1942 Dear Professor Tillich,

Several weeks ago Trude gave me a copy of your pamphlet on War Aims which only tonight have I had a chance to read. I want to hasten to express my profound agreement with its views.

Unless we stand up now and are counted for the New Deal, the war will in a true sense be lost, for we will be reverting to or perpetuating conditions that make inevitable the future growth of reaction, militarism and nationalism. Unless we appeal now to the underground liberation movements in Europe and utilize the anti-fascist-emigre groups, our hopes of European federation will be defeated. But there is no need to harangue you on this subject!

How to make such a view politically effective – that is the question. Your pamphlet is, I feel, a real contribution.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
