TO THE VISITORS OF FRIENDSHIP HOUSE. Dear Friends:

The Executive Committee of Friendship House desires that there be a well-rounded program of activities in Friendship House. To that end the following has been accepted by the Committee.

Every second Monday, beginning Monday, Jan. 27th, a meeting will take place in Friendship House where religious discussions of general interest will be discussed. Professors of Union Theological Seminary and other outstanding religious leaders will lead the discussion after a few words of introduction. Problems of the Philosophy of Religion, of Religious Education, of Church Membership, of religious ethics in the present world, of State and Church in Europe and America will be dealt with. (compare the enclosed program). Every visitor of Friendship House, whether within or without a special religious tradition is urgently invited to participate in these discussions. It is hoped that the Americans visiting Friendship House will also participate in these programs. These meetings will start at 8 P.M. and last as long as there are questions, but not beyond 10 P.M. The discussion will be held in English but there will be usually a possibility of having questions translated into other languages.

The one purpose of these meetings is to introduce to emigres the religious structure and activities of the churches in this country. The other purpose is to find in common search a religious interpretation of the present world situation and the fate of the individual as determined by it.

Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.
