               Institute of Social Research. I am glad to report that <rs ref="#tillich_person_id__4437" type="person">Dr. Landis</rs> is impressed with the
               proposal and has so advised his friends in the American Jewish Committee.</p>

                     <p>Paul Tillich (20. August 1886 – 22. Oktober 1965) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe und Religionsphilosoph. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Feldprediger im Ersten Weltkrieg lehrte er an verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland, bis er 1933 emigrieren musste und in den USA wirkte, unter anderem in New York, Harvard und Chicago. Tillich entwickelte eine Theologie der Kultur und verstand Religion als das „was uns unbedingt angeht“. In seiner „Systematic Theology“ formulierte er die Methode der Korrelation und deutete Gott als „Macht des Seins“. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Theologie, Philosophie und Existenzdenken und hatten großen Einfluss auf das religiöse Denken der Moderne.</p>

                     <p>Max Horkheimer (14. Februar 1895 – 7. Juli 1973) war ein deutscher Sozialphilosoph und zentrale Figur der Frankfurter Schule. Nach kaufmännischer Lehre und Kriegsdienst studierte er Philosophie, Psychologie und Nationalökonomie, promovierte 1922 in Frankfurt und habilitierte sich dort 1925. Auf Betreiben Paul Tillichs erhielt er 1930 das Ordinariat für Sozialphilosophie und damit die Leitung des Instituts für Sozialforschung. 1933 emigrierte er über Genf in die USA, wo mit Adorno die Dialektik der Aufklärung entstand. Sein Programm einer interdisziplinären Gesellschaftsforschung nannte er ab 1937 Kritische Theorie. 1949 kehrte er nach Frankfurt zurück und leitete 1951 bis 1953 die Universität.</p>
